The département of Finistère
lies at the western tip of Brittany, looking out into the western channel
and Atlantic Ocean and is the most westerly point of mainland France.
The name literally means 'end of the earth' - so it's really the French
equivalent of our Land's End just across the English Channel!
The three largest towns in the département
are Brest (the administrative centre, an important port and naval base),
Morlaix and Quimper. The island of Ouessant (we call it Ushant) also
belongs to the département of Finstère.
Accessibility : Ferries sail from Plymouth to Roscoff
and also from Ireland to Roscoff.
The dramatic coastline is often likened to the fjords
because of its rugged inlets and coves.
